About Main Street
Main Street Delaware, Inc.
is a 501 (C-6) non-profit organization. It was the first central Ohio
community to be designated a Main Street Program. Its goal is to beautify,
revitalize, and preserve our historic downtown business district. We do
this by:
-
Organizing
beautification projects such as hanging
flower baskets, Holiday flags, and
the Brickscape program.
-
Hosting events that
draw people downtown to shop, eat, and have fun such as the annual Christmas
parade, the Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony, First Friday gatherings, and the
Farmers Markets.
-
Providing design
assistance to encourage building improvement which enhances the overall
appearance of the downtown while maintaining the historic integrity of the
downtown. See the 2007 Design
Awards.
-
Promoting improved
economic viability of the downtown by working with our partners on issues
such as parking, snow removal, and downtown maintenance.
-
Strengthening overall
awareness and appreciation of our downtown through the Main Street Our
Street historic tours, the Artful Spaces promotion, and the
Ross Museum Wine
Tasting event.
Main Street Delaware Inc. works with an
incremental process which has resulted in approximately $58 million of public
and private reinvestment, the interior and exterior rehabilitation of 56
buildings, a net gain of 26 new businesses, the expansion of 17 businesses,
and an addition of 135 full time and 71 part time jobs.
The Main Street process is based on four tenets:
1.
Organization: Building consensus and cooperation among public and
private groups and individuals, and identifying sources of funding for
revitalization activities.
2.
Design: Enhancing the commercial district's physical appearance a
through building rehabilitation, compatible new construction, public
improvements, and design management systems.
3.
Promotion: Marketing the commercial district through events and advertising
to attract customers, potential investors, new businesses, residents, and
visitors.
4.
Economic
Restructuring: Strengthening the district's economic base
and creating new opportunities through careful analysis and appropriate
mixed-use development.
